Types of Aluminum Piping
There are four main categories of aluminum piping:
Architectural (A) – used primarily for residential or commercial buildings
Industrial (I) – used in industrial processes like refineries and chemical plants
Mining (M) – used under extreme conditions found in mining operations
Marine (M) – designed for marine applications like boating or submarines
The 6061 aluminum pipe comes in a variety of forms, including:
6061-T6 Seamless Pipe: This is one of the most popular types of 6061 aluminum pipe because it is versatile with a variety of applications in various industries. It is highly invulnerable to corrosion, abrasion, and chemical environments and has excellent weldability. The 6061-T6 Aluminum Pipe can be used in all types of construction where strength and cost-effectiveness are essential.
6061-T4 Seamless Pipe: This type of pipe is ideal for use in highly corrosive environments, such as irrigation systems where mild steel pipes cannot withstand the stress present in different soil types due to their manufacturing process. The 6061-T4 Aluminum Pipe is also used extensively as a pressure vessel material due to its fatigue resistance, pitting, corrosion, and crack propagation.
6061-T5 Seamless Pipe: An alloy made up primarily of copper, with smaller amounts of silicon, tin, and magnesium.
The advantages of aluminum pipes are:
High strength
Aluminum pipe is a high-strength material with a tensile strength of 2500 MPa.
Durable
Aluminum pipe is more durable than steel pipe or other alternatives. In addition, it has higher corrosion resistance, more stable mechanical properties, and lower deformation under heat and pressure.
Corrosion resistance
Aluminum is not susceptible to corrosion by moist air. Although the corrosion resistance is about three times that of steel pipe, it can be used at high humidity conditions (75% RH) for long periods and applications where high corrosion resistance is required.
Cost-effective
The aluminum pipe has the cheapest production costs among the common materials for pipelines. The production cost per meter is about half that of stainless steel pipe. Besides, the transportation cost (freight) is also low because it’s lighter than steel pipe and easy to be loaded onto trucks.
Lightweight
Aluminum is a lightweight metal and so doesn’t weigh much. That makes it a practical choice for building lightweight structures such as bridges and lightweight frame structures.
